Lucan

Lucan is a pleasant little town in the Barony of Newcastle, seven miles from Dublin. It forms the southern terminus of the Dublin and Lucan Tramway. Area about 1,100 acres. Population, 850. The families of Colthurst-Vesey and Shackleton are the principal owners. The town is remarkably well and neatly built, being delightfully situated on the banks of the Liffey amidst the most delightful scenery. The neighbourhood is extremely interesting. There are many well-arranged villa residences adjoining. The leading industries are the mills of Messrs. Shackleton and the woollen factory of Messrs. Hill, both of which have acquired a high national reputation. The Lucan Hydropathic Spa Co. Ltd. have built a truly magnificent hotel and sanatorium, which is under the present management fast becoming one of the most fashionable resorts of the upper ten of Irish society. A short distance from the town are the well-known and much-frequented Salmon Leap and Liffey Waterfalls. The public buildings are a handsome and capacious Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland (a neat structure with a tower and belfry), a Dispensary, Lending Library, Rectory, National Schools, and a Parochial Hall. There is a Petty Sessions Court held every alternate Monday. George O'Malley, Chapelizod is clerk.
