Chapelizod

Chapelizod is an interesting village three miles south of the General Post Office, Dublin. It is pleasantly situated on the banks of the River Liffey, principally in the Barony of Castleknock, comprising about 60 acres, with a population of 1,250. The chief industry in the neighbourhood is the Phoenix Park Distillery, which gives employment to a considerable number of hands. It is one of the few distilleries in Ireland that is gradually increasing its output, notwithstanding the delicate attentions of Mr. Lloyd George. Prior to the erection of the Vice-Regal Lodge it was the residence of the ViceRoy and not unlikely to become in the immediate future the residence of a Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The principal buildings are the Church of Ireland -- a venerable pile covered with ivy -- attached to which there is a massive tower in the old baronial style. The Catholic Church is a handsome and capacious structure capable of accommodating 800 worshippers. There are very large Convent Boarding and Day schools at Mount Sackville, where upwards of 100 children receive a high-class education. There are the Boys' National Schools, a very fine new building, with an average attendance of nearly 200, under the capable control of Mr. James Reidy, and a Girls' School under the charge of Mrs. O'Donovan. The Drummond Institute at Mulberry Hill provides a comfortable home, clothing and education for the orphan daughters of soldiers. It is under the management of Miss Rouselle, and is regarded as one of the most successful institutions of the kingdom. There is a Postal and Money Order Office, R.I.C. Barracks and Dispensary.
